Google Nexus One Phone-Google Unveils New 'Froyo' Android OS, Runs Flash Software

Google today introduced a new version of its Android mobile operating system, called "Froyo," which runs Flash software to let users see almost all video content from the Web.

The Mountain View, Calif.-based company said the new software also includes new features such as hardware acceleration of video and smooth navigation of Flash-enabled Web sites.

With a few exceptions, smartphones today, including the iPhone, haven't been able to show much Flash content, even though, the standard helps deliver around 75 percent of online videos worldwide.

"If you believe in openness, if you believe in choice, if you believe in innovation from everyone, then welcome to Android," said Vic Gundotra, Google's vice president of engineering.

Last month, Apple chief executive Steve Jobs slammed Adobe, publishing a lengthy essay that sharply criticizes the popular Flash software, calling it unreliable and ill-suited for the iPhone.

"It turns out that on the Internet, people use Flash," Gundotra said. "And part of being open means you are inclusive, rather than exclusive, and you are open to innovation."

Adobe said it has fixed many of the issues in 10.1, such as being a battery hog. It does this by rendering only the part of page that shows the video, and not the whole screen, as it had previously done. It also shuts down when the device goes into sleep mode, so it isn't consuming power in the background.

Other features include the ability to tether a laptop to the phone, a faster, more powerful browser, a manager to store applications on a microSD card, improved security and refinements to Gmail, calendar and voice recognition software.

Google said Nexus One owners will be able to upgrade to Android 2.2 over-the-air later today. The HTC Incredible, Evo 4G, Desire and Motorola Droid will receive it in the coming weeks.

HTC Legend Will Be Launched By AT&T

According to rumors, the HTC Legend will be launched in the US via AT&T. FYI, the FCC has recently approved the HTC PB76110, which seems to be the North American version of the European Legend (aka HTC PB76100). The North American version supports 850/ 1900MHz 3G bands. AT&T should launch the HTC Legend in May or June 2010. Stay tuned for more updates.

Nokia E72 White Edition To Be Released Later This Month

Nokia will launch the Nokia E72 White Edition later this month. Malaysia will be the first country to get the Nokia E72 White Edition for $327. The white E72 comes with matching accessories such as white Nokia Stereo Headset WH-205, white Nokia Bluetooth Headset BH-216, white strap, white pouch, and phone jewelery.

Nokia C6 Phone

The Nokia C6 is a 3.2-inch HD touch screen smartphone with a slide-out four-row QWERTY keyboard focused on messaging and communications. It boasts a customizable home screen with one-touch access to contacts, emails and Facebook updates. The handset supports for up to 10 email accounts from hosts including Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail and Ovi Mail. Based on S60 5th edition, the C6 also comes with a 5.0-megapixel camera, an FM stereo radio, Ovi Maps with free walk and drive navigation and support for up to 16GB of storage on microSD.

Garmin Asus Garminfone

Garmin Asus's first attempt at a mobile phone was a bit of a disaster, but undeterred they have pushed on with a number of different handsets, the most interesting of which is the Garmin Asus Garminfone also known as the Garminfone by T-Mobile. Exclusive to T-Mobile in the USA, the Garminfone brings all the advantages of specialist satellite navigation to the flexible Android platform.

The Garminfone comes at an awkward time for manufacturers of personal navigation devices, as Google now gives away free turn-by-turn navigation with Google Maps. However, Google's product does not really match the quality of established manufacturers such as Garmin and TomTom, and it is the more discerning market that Garmin Asus is targeting.

Instead of trying to reinvent the wheel, Garmin Asus have built the Garminfone on the Android platform, although we don't know what version of Android the Garminfone uses. This gives the Garminfone a wide range of applications running on a relatively stable operating system which should appeal to many customers.


The hardware is pretty straightforward and not really very high-end as far as Android is concerned. There's a 3.5" 320 x T-Mobile Garminfone 480 pixel touchscreen display, 3 megapixel camera, WiFi and HSPA high-speed data with maximum download speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps. Of course, the Garminfone supports GPS too.

Because this is an Android phone, then there's a decent web browser, email client and a huge range of other applications that you can choose. T-Mobile USA does have other Android handsets available though, and for general purpose use the Motorola CLIQ is difficult to beat.

There's no word on pricing, but if priced like the CLIQ it should be less than $150 with a new contract. T-Mobile and Garmin Asus say that the Garminfone should be available during the spring, and this particular model will be sold in the USA only.
